The Impact of Mother Tongue on the Learning of English among Tangle Speakers

Abstract
This study investigates the influence of mother tongue on the pronunciation of English words among Tangle-speaking secondary school students in Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe State, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the areas that Tangle phonemes interfere in the learning of English; analyze the Mother Tongue (MT) influences on English of the students, assess; the level of MT interference among the Tangle students of English; and provide insights. Qualitative method was used for analysis of 30 participants selected through purposive sampling. The results show that the Tangle speakers experienced interference in their spoken English and 87% of the students experienced difficulties in pronunciation. The study concludes that mother tongue interference poses significant challenges to Tangle-speaking students in their efforts to learn and articulate English. Recommendations are made for language instructors to be aware of mother tongue interference and to incorporate phonetics training into English language instruction.
